Using keys to identify fungi

Some books and web sites about Australian fungi have keys to fungi. However the keys are mostly frustrating and of limited use because they include few fungi and are difficult to use – often demanding an expert knowledge of microscopic structures. However keys to fungi are becoming more user-friendly. The use of keys which give you choice A or B at each step (so-called dichotomous keys) are gradually being replaced by interactive keys which enable you to choose whatever features of a fungus you want to help key out their identity. For example, the "101 Forest Fungi of Eastern Australia" CD-ROM, and "Funkey - Interactive Key and Synopsis to the Genera of Macrofungi in Australia" CD-ROM.
