Identifying fungi
One way to begin recognizing some distinctive fungi is to compare the appearance and main features of them with illustrations in field guides. There are not many field guides about Australian fungi (see a list of books in the "Additional Resources" section), and these all deal with only a small proportion of our fungal biodiversity. Field guides about overseas fungi are only of limited use because many Australian fungi are unique. There are currently no books specifically on Australian woodland fungi!
There are an increasing number of electronic resources that can be consulted, including a few CD-ROM’s on Australian fungi – such as the Fungimap CD-ROM, and the 101 Forest Fungi CD-ROM. (See the "Additional Resources" section). On the internet there are resources such as Fungimap, Fungi at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, Fungi of Australia (from ANBG), Australasian Mycological Society, Sydney Fungal Studies Group. Such web sites have useful information about how to study fungi. There are some large image databases of fungi such as referred to in Fungi Images on the Net site.
