Formal names of fungi
As do plants and animals, fungi also have two worded formal (Latin) names. For example the edible “white button mushroom” has the formal name:
Agaricus bisporus. Agaricus is the genus and bisporus is the species. Formal names of the more common or easily recognized larger fungi can be learnt from various books on fungi
(See "Additional Resources"). The names of all mushroom-like larger fungi currently known in Australia are listed in
the book "Fungi of Australia vol. 2A", and in an interactive catalogue at
the Royal
Botanic Gardens website.
Names of all known fungi for the world are listed at the CABI
Bioscience and CBS Database of Fungal Names.
If you have found a fungus and are sure of its genus but not the species, you can refer to it as for example,
Agaricus sp. If you want to refer to many species of one genus, you can write it as
Agaricus species or Agaricus spp. It is conventional to write the formal names of fungi in italics or to underline them, but this is not necessary for hand-written notes or check-lists. Likewise, the author names of fungal species do not need to be written except in formal scientific publications.
