Storing fungi in a herbarium

To store the fungi use packets for filing specimens. The packets may be made by folding A4 sized sheets of plain paper. Within the packets, air dried specimens together with any successful spore prints and a tag with the code number should be sealed in zip-lock type plastic bags. Alternatively, paper envelopes can be used, and must be used if fumigation is preferred to freezing as the method for insect control. Write or stick on the packets basic information such as: code number, genus, species (if known, if not perhaps a common name), collector, date, and location. Labels may be written in ink by hand, or generated by computer (see the topic Database for a fungi herbarium).

For housing the fungi, place the packets in drawers, cupboards, or plastic boxed with air-tight lids. Arrange the packets in order of time or location or taxonomic order, depending on your needs. Because many fungi will be un-named it is probably best to order the fungi in numerical order according to their code number (see the topic Recording the fungi you collect).
